When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart and you shall see that, in truth, you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
Our family definitely suffered a sad loss this summer. Our 7 month old puppy, Boston, died very unexpectedly on the 4th of July. He got sick with some congestion and ended up with a high fever and pneumonia. We took him to the emergency hospital, but, unfortunately, he did not respond to treatment and died the next morning after exploratory surgery to look for something additional that might be causing the problem. The vets had never seen anything like this in a puppy and felt like there was definitely an underlying cause to his death other than just pneumonia. It may have been a genetic problem or some type of immune deficiency. I had already become so attached to Boston, but the hardest part was definitely telling the kids and watching them grieve. He loved our children so much, and the feeling was mutual. It was hard to explain why something like that happened to a young puppy. It was definitely a life lesson for them and for us, and we were able to have many good discussions with them during the following weeks. The support we received from family and friends after this happened reminded us how blessed we truly are. Boston was a very loved puppy, and he will be missed, but not forgotten.
